The population of baby boom was born in the years between 1946-1964 in the United States and Canada.
Source of Baby Boomers
Young male soldiers returning to the United States, Canada, and Australia following tours of duty overseas during World War II began-families, these soldiers’ families brought about a significant number of new children into these countries. This dramatic increase in the number of babies from 1946 to 1964 (1947 to 1966 in Canada and 1946-1961 in Australia) is called the Baby Boom population.
The Boomer Bulge
This population bulge expanded institutions in the countries from nurses to elementary schools then high schools and church education wings.. The station wagon model of car was developed to transport this increased baby population. Much of this boomer population of nineteen years (1946-1964) grew up with Woodstock, the Vietnam War, and John F. Kennedy as president.
Who Will Take Care of Aging Boomers
Significantly these boomers had fewer children of their own and less grandchildren. So the big question is who will take care of the aging boom population? Also, there will be a considerable drop in the number of the people in the workforce in these countries.
Challenges As Boomers Age
Health care has become a present issue for Canadian and US systems. The baby boom population is also living longer than their previous generations. Once this boomer population passes there will be a considerable change in the makeup of societies. Will there be enough workers filling the workforce left by the boomers; their younger generations will have considerable challenges facing themselves. How will the younger population fund pensions and government programs like health care.
Drastic Employment Changes on Horizon
There are considerable challenges facing governments and private employers to fund pensions delivered to boomer employees. Many of the union fights in Canada at the present time are centered on pensions and wage parity. Many large companies are trying to negotiate with their unions for much lower wages for new workers and drastic changes to pensions funding formulas.
When Boomers Are Gone Then What
As boomers our children will have difficult shoes to fill. When it comes to twenty years from now the situation will be vastly different. Hopefully governments and the private sectors of society can prepare for the aging boomer population. And the time when they are gone there will be a much smaller population to work and fund programs.
